Health Insurance Companies
The astronomical cost of health care today makes it imperative that people have coverage. All it takes is one accident or one illness, and you and your family can be wiped out both medically and financially without it. There are hundreds of health insurance companies to choose from. How do you know which one is right for you?
To ensure the best coverage for you and your family, it’s important to shop around and compare different people and places for your coverage needs. What they offer and how they offer it varies from one company to another. Most places offer several plan options. Deciding which option is best for you is one of the keys to finding out which of the many quotes and places you should pick.
Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) is one option that a company may offer. You agree to visit providers who are in the HMO’s network and will only have to pay a minimal co-pay. They may offer a Preferred-Provider Organization (PPO) option, where a group of providers contract with the insurance company and offer discounted rates to patients. Health insurance companies also offer Fee for Service plans where you may visit your own providers and the insurance covers a percentage of the bill.
Each plan may have different options to choose from as well. There may be different yearly deductible options. The deductible is the amount that you will have to pay yourself before the insurance company will start covering medical bills. For example, if you choose a policy that has a $500 deductible, then you will have to pay $500 worth of provider bills before you are covered. A $0 deductible means no out of pocket expense for you.
Once you understand the different types of plans that health insurance companies offer, the next step is figuring out what type of coverage you and your family will need. It’s crucial to find a company that covers you for major medical expenses. What if you become seriously ill or badly injured in an accident? Many have policies with a $1 million maximum of lifetime benefits. But with the soaring cost of health care, you may want to consider policies with a higher maximum limit.
Decide what other options you need. They may also offer plans for dental, vision care and other options that may drive the premium costs up more than you have budgeted out. Depending on your personal and medical needs, ask yourself if it is less expensive for you to pay for those options out of pocket, or pay a slightly higher premium each month and know those medical needs are covered as well.
